HOW WE WORK

Field Research. Sharp Analysis. High-level Advocacy.

Field Research

Crisis Group's Claudia Gazzini speaks with an oil engineer loyal to Ibrahim Jathran outside of Zueitina, one of the oil ports under Jathran's control and among those shut down since summer 2013, March 2014. CRISIS GROUP

Field research and engagement are at the heart of Crisis Group’s global monitoring of actual and potential conflicts, and inform our detailed policy advice.

Our influence stems from rigorous, fact-based reporting produced by experienced analysts based all over the world. Our staff members (approximately 150) and consultants are drawn from a broad spectrum of backgrounds including academia, civil society, diplomacy and media.

Our independence and even-handed approach earn us access that others cannot get. We engage with all parties, speak to local, regional and international actors, and forge a common language for resolving disputes.

Our analysts are based in or near conflict zones and vulnerable countries, where they cultivate strong networks of contacts over years of sustained work. They are uniquely placed to find out what is happening and why.

High-level Advocacy

Crisis Group achieves positive policy change primarily through direct, personal advocacy thanks to its extraordinary access to political leaders and decision-makers.

We are influential in Western power centres including Brussels, New York, Washington and London – and we are actively shaping the debate in global capitals such as Istanbul, Beijing, New Delhi and Nairobi. Our staff conduct more than 3,000 policy meetings per year around the world.

We partner with governments, think-tanks and other organisations for events on hot wars and forgotten conflicts – including with Chatham House (London), Foreign Affairs magazine (New York), European Peace-Building Liaison Office (Brussels), TEPAV (Ankara), and UN agencies worldwide.
